Saliva & Mineral Testing

Looking Beyond the Teeth and Gums

Oral health is influenced by many factors, including the environment within the mouth, nutrition, lifestyle, and individual health considerations.

As part of our holistic approach to dentistry, we may use additional testing to gather information that can complement a traditional dental examination. Two options we may discuss with appropriate patients are salivary bacteria testing and Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA).

These tests look at different aspects of the individual. Salivary testing provides information about specific microorganisms in the mouth, while hair mineral analysis can provide information about mineral levels that may be relevant to broader nutritional discussions.

Neither test replaces a comprehensive dental examination. Instead, they can provide additional information when appropriate.

Salivary Bacteria Testing

The mouth is home to hundreds of different species of microorganisms that make up the oral microbiome. These microorganisms interact with one another and with the tissues of the mouth.

Changes in the oral microbial environment can be associated with conditions such as periodontal disease, inflammation, and dental decay.

Understanding the bacterial environment in the mouth can provide additional information when developing an individualized approach to oral and periodontal health.

What Is Salivary Bacteria Testing?

Salivary bacteria testing is a laboratory analysis performed using a saliva sample taken at our dental office. Depending on the specific test, it can identify and measure levels of selected bacteria associated with periodontal disease.

Our practice may test for five commonly studied periodontal bacteria:

  • Fn — Fusobacterium nucleatum

  • Tf — Tannerella forsythia

  • Td — Treponema denticola

  • Pg — Porphyromonas gingivalis

  • Aa — Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans

The results can provide additional information about the microbial environment in your mouth.

Why Test Oral Bacteria?

A traditional dental examination evaluates clinical findings such as gum inflammation, bleeding, periodontal pocket depths, bone levels, plaque, and other signs of oral disease.

Salivary testing provides a different type of information by examining specific microorganisms.

Combining laboratory information with a comprehensive dental examination may help us develop a more individualized approach to periodontal care.

Testing may be considered for patients who:

  • Have signs of periodontal disease

  • Experience recurring gum inflammation

  • Have a history of above average decay

  • Have concerns about persistent oral infections

  • Have not responded as expected to previous periodontal care

  • Want additional information about their oral microbiome

Using the Results

Salivary testing is one piece of information that can be considered alongside your clinical examination and dental history.

Depending on your individual circumstances, treatment may include conventional periodontal therapy and, when appropriate, additional approaches such as:

  • Professional periodontal cleaning

  • Improved home-care techniques

  • Antimicrobial therapies

  • Ozone therapy

  • Laser-assisted periodontal treatment

  • Antimicrobial rinses

  • Other treatments when clinically indicated

In some situations, antibiotic therapy may also be considered based on the patient's clinical condition and professional evaluation.

The goal is to use the available information to develop a treatment approach that is appropriate for the individual patient.

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis

Nutrition & Oral Health

The health of the mouth is connected to the health of the rest of the body. Nutrition provides the building blocks needed to maintain teeth, bones, gums, and other tissues.

Dietary patterns can also influence the oral environment and may be relevant to conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease.

For patients interested in a broader approach to wellness, Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) may provide additional nutritional and mineral information to discuss alongside their dental care.

What Is HTMA?

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis is a laboratory test that analyzes a sample of hair for various minerals.

Because hair grows over time, mineral analysis can provide information that may be useful for certain nutritional and wellness discussions.

HTMA results should not be used by themselves to diagnose a dental condition or nutritional deficiency. Instead, they can be considered as one additional source of information within a broader evaluation.

How Could Mineral Information Relate to Dentistry?

Nutrition plays an important role in maintaining healthy oral tissues.

When appropriate, discussing nutritional patterns and mineral intake can be part of a comprehensive conversation about oral health and prevention.

HTMA may provide information to discuss topics such as:

  • Dietary habits

  • Mineral intake

  • Nutritional patterns

  • Oral-health prevention

  • General wellness goals

  • Individualized nutrition considerations

A Personalized Approach

Every patient has different dental concerns, nutritional habits, health circumstances, and treatment goals.

That is why we believe testing should be considered on an individual basis rather than used routinely for every patient.

If testing is appropriate, the results can be reviewed in the context of your dental examination, history, lifestyle, and other relevant information.

Our goal is to gather meaningful information and use it thoughtfully rather than relying on a single test or measurement.

Looking at the Bigger Picture

Salivary bacteria testing and Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis look at very different aspects of a patient's health.

Salivary testing focuses on the microbial environment within the mouth.

Hair mineral analysis provides mineral information that may be relevant to broader nutritional discussions.

Together, these types of testing can fit into a holistic approach that considers more than just the immediate dental problem.

They are not substitutes for professional dental or medical evaluation. Instead, when appropriate, they can provide additional information to help guide conversations about prevention, treatment, nutrition, and individualized care.

Testing as Part of Holistic Dentistry

Our goal is to understand each patient as an individual and consider the factors that may be relevant to their oral health.

When additional testing may provide useful information, we can discuss the potential benefits, limitations, and relevance to your particular situation.

This allows you to be an active participant in your care while giving us additional information to consider when developing your personalized dental treatment plan.
