Ozone Therapy

Ozone Therapy in Dentistry

Ozone (O₃) is a form of oxygen that has been studied for its antimicrobial properties and has applications in dentistry as an adjunct to conventional treatment. In our practice, ozone may be incorporated into certain procedures as part of a conservative, minimally invasive approach to oral healthcare.

Ozone can be delivered in different forms, such as water or gas, and may be used to help reduce microbial contamination and support a clean treatment environment. Ozone therapy is used as an additional tool when it may be beneficial for the individual patient and procedure.

How Is Ozone Used in Dentistry?

Ozone may be incorporated into several areas of dental care, including restorative procedures, extractions, implant treatment, and periodontal care.

Its antimicrobial properties make it particularly useful when reducing bacterial contamination is an important part of treatment.

Cavities & Tooth Decay

After decay has been removed, ozone may be used as an adjunct to help reduce microorganisms in the treated area before the tooth is restored.

Ozonated water or gas may be incorporated into the treatment process depending on the location and extent of the decay.

The goal is to support a clean treatment environment while preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

Extractions & Healing

Ozone may also be used during extraction procedures as part of an effort to reduce microbial contamination around the treatment site.

For appropriate patients, ozone can be incorporated into the care of the extraction site during and after treatment. We also evaluate areas that have experienced previous extractions and may have concerns related to healing or the condition of the surrounding tissues.

Treatment is individualized based on clinical findings rather than assuming that every previous extraction site requires additional treatment.

Dental Implants

Maintaining a healthy surgical environment is an important part of implant treatment.

Ozone may be used as an adjunct during certain implant procedures to help reduce microbial contamination around the treatment area. Depending on the individual case, it may be incorporated into the overall approach to supporting healthy soft tissues and bone during treatment and healing.

Supporting Tooth Preservation

When a tooth has deep decay, the goal is often to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

Ozone may be incorporated into certain restorative procedures as an adjunct to conventional treatment. By addressing the treated area and reducing microbial contamination, ozone may be considered as part of a conservative approach when attempting to maintain the natural tooth.

Ozone is not a substitute for appropriate treatment of advanced decay or infection, and not every tooth can be saved without endodontic treatment. However, when appropriate, our goal is to use conservative techniques that give the natural tooth the best reasonable opportunity to remain healthy and functional.

Gum & Periodontal Care

Ozone may also be used as an adjunct in periodontal and soft-tissue care. Our practice uses ozone water at every dental cleaning visit at no extra cost to the patient.

Depending on the condition being treated, ozone or ozonated water may be incorporated into treatment to help reduce microbial contamination in areas affected by periodontal disease or localized oral infections.

It may also be considered for certain oral ulcerations and other soft-tissue concerns when clinically appropriate.

Ozonated Water

Ozonated water is one method of delivering ozone in dentistry.

Ozone dissolved in water can be used during certain procedures where an antimicrobial rinse or irrigation is appropriate. This allows ozone to be incorporated into treatment without requiring the patient to receive systemic medication.

The specific use of ozonated water depends on the procedure, the condition being treated, and the patient's individual needs.

A Conservative Approach to Ozone Dentistry

Ozone therapy is one of several tools available in a modern dental practice. Ozone may be used as an adjunct when its properties are relevant to the procedure.

Our approach is to evaluate the entire clinical situation, explain the available treatment options, and use ozone when it may provide a meaningful benefit as part of the patient's individualized care plan.
