Cavitation Detection with 3D CBCT Imaging

What Are Dental Cavitations?

The term dental cavitation is commonly used to describe an area of altered bone, often associated with a previous tooth extraction site. In some cases, the bone in an extraction socket may not heal as expected, leaving an area infection.

These areas can be challenging to assess using conventional 2D X-rays alone. CBCT imaging allows us to examine the underlying bone in three dimensions and identify findings that may not be apparent on standard radiographs.

Some areas of altered bone may be associated with inflammation, infection, or changes in bone healing.

Why Evaluate Cavitation Concerns?

Our holistic approach considers oral health as part of your overall well-being. Persistent dental infections and inflammation can affect local tissues and may have broader health implications. When a previous extraction site or another area of the jaw raises concern, further evaluation can help determine whether additional care is appropriate.

We take your symptoms, dental history, clinical examination, and imaging findings into consideration rather than relying on a single test or image to reach a conclusion.

How CBCT 3D Imaging Helps

Cone beam CT provides detailed cross-sectional and three-dimensional views of the jawbone and teeth. This technology can help us:

  • Evaluate previous extraction sites for areas of altered bone structure or healing concerns.

  • Examine the surrounding bone in greater detail than conventional 2D radiographs allow.

  • Investigate areas of concern when symptoms or clinical findings warrant additional imaging.

  • Support treatment planning when a dental or bony abnormality has been identified.

CBCT imaging has limitations, and some conditions cannot be confirmed by imaging alone. We recommend this type of scan when the additional information is likely to be useful for your individual evaluation.

Can Old Extraction Sites Be Evaluated?

Yes. If you have concerns about an extraction site from years ago, it may still be possible to evaluate the area. The passage of time does not eliminate the need to investigate a site when symptoms or other clinical findings warrant it.

If an abnormality is identified, we will discuss the findings, explain the available options, and help you make an informed decision about whether treatment is appropriate.

A Whole-Person Approach to Dental Health

We believe good dentistry begins with understanding the individual, not simply treating an isolated symptom. By combining advanced imaging, careful clinical evaluation, and thoughtful treatment planning, we aim to help patients make informed decisions about their oral health.

If you have questions about a previous extraction site or would like to learn whether CBCT imaging may be appropriate for you, we welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns.
